Zero inspiration and feeling depressed
« on: October 13, 2014, 01:45:36 PM »
I've been feeling so uninspired to do anything constructive or creative lately. I can't really say why, but I've got the Mondays everyday now, and I have been feeling like this for a while.

I've also been loosing a lot of weight, something like 10kg over the last months, so my jeans are starting to fall down and I look like I'm into hip-hop because of my saggy pants.  :( I used to workout (kettlebells and running) 3-4 days a week, but since July I've only been able to do an occasional run every now and then.

I feel weak both mentally and physically. I have no drive for anything, all I want to do is just sit alone and zone-out with whatever mind numbing entertainment I can find. I'm an introvert, so this is to some degree natural for me when I need to recover, but I'm borderline misanthropic at this point.

It's not the first time I'm feeling down, but this is starting to get ridiculous as I feel there's no real reason for me to be like this, at least not for this long.

So, how do you guys cope or get back on track when you're down? Therapy and/or prescription drugs is not really my style. (I haven't seen a doctor since 2007)

10k's a lot to lose, amigo.

For me, I think the best medicine is usually the simplest.  It may not work for you, but who knows?  If I'm feeling down I try to work on the mechanical things that I can actually do something about.

1) Eating more veggies, grains, meat and nuts/olive oil.  Essentially, force myself to eat a little healthier.  Putting veggies, protein powder and nuts in a blender makes it really easy to get some good nutrients.  Also, try forcing a liter of water down your throat every morning when you wake up.

2) Try to get outside more.  Take a long walk or a long bike ride, preferably someplace nice.  If the weather sucks, I watch Big Cat Diary on Netflix.

3) Force myself to start going to the gym again, even if I don't work out particularly hard.  The routine's more important.  I dunno if you go long-distance running, but I have to say that for me I don't think it's the best form of exercise to boost my mood.  Weight-lifting is fine.  Sprints are fine.  Endurance training just takes it out of me, though.

4) Get to bed on time.  Hop into bed with a book 30 minutes to an hour before I want to get to sleep.

5) Hang out with someone I enjoy, even if its just for a movie, coffee or whatever.  Usually perks me up a bit.

Anyways, I feel like if you take care of your physiological needs it usually helps put you in a position to deal with the issues that have you down.

Maybe we should plan to all get together sometime soon and test the bits of the TL1CP that are finished (i.e. just play some TL2 with some more-or-less functional classes) :)  What do you think?

Hey Wolven. It pains me to read what you wrote but I will try to focus on the brighter parts.

I think, by writing about this in the 1st place AND pointing out that its been too long this way etc., you have already won half the battle. You KNOW something is wrong. Many people take too long to get that far, sometimes never.

Of course, the 2nd half of the battle is still going to be hard. I think an important ingredient for that is your DESIRE to beat this, to make it better, for yourself, the ones you love, anyone you believe deserves the best of you (of course, You should be near the top of that list). Get that desire, then try stuff to see what works. Familiar stuff, new stuff, what's important is the trying. Trying says "I wont be beaten".

Sorry if that all sounds like a self-help book. Im just going based on my 50 years of living (yes, I am that old).

Keep us updated man. Id really like to help :)

Thanks for the reply guys. Just being able to make a post like this without feeling like a fool helps a lot.

@gytfunke Some good advice there. I'm a believer in good physical health = good mental health. And my food intake has been crap lately, so what you suggest makes a lot of sense. By eating like I have I've and not working out I've probably lowered my T levels quite a bit, so I'll try focusing on good nutrition and proper hydration again from now.

I workout at home, which can make it a bit hard to keep a good routine, but I'll try starting slowly again and not stress about my performance level right now. I know I can be back in shape within a month or so, if I just start lifting that damn iron ball again. It feels so heavy now compared to what it did before...

I just came back from a run now, luckily I'm running with a colleague of mine, so it's easier to "Just Do It" (TM) when you have an obligation. We usually run about 10 kilometers, so it's not that long. The positive thing about loosing all that weight is that I'm a faster a stronger runner now than I was a few months back, so it's not all bad.  ;)

I'd love to to do some TL1CP testing with you guys soon, would be great to see some results of the work that's been put into the project.

@Phanjam Wise words from a wise man. I was apprehensive about posting this, but then I thought f... it! I know the guys here are good guys and they will support me, so I don't care if it's on the internet forever. (Here's looking at you Google)

Like I wrote above, it's not the first time I feel like this and I've been more down than this and bounced back, but when you're down it's hard to look up. There's no need for you guys to worry too much though, I don't have suicidal thoughts or anything like that. (Been there before too) I'm just sick of feeling like this, where there are so many things I want to do, instead of sitting around, feeling sorry for myself.

Guess I'm feeling particularly blue today as I just handed my daughter back to my ex again, after having her with me for a week now. It always pains me to do this since we live so far apart and I don't get to see her that often. I've gotten my Daddy batteries charged a bit now though and that usually helps for a while.

BTW, you don't sound like a self help book, you sound like a goodhearted guy who's been around the block a few times. And haven't you heard, 50 is the new 30, so you're golden.  ;)

Thanks again guys. Just reading your replies and feeling that you care helps a lot.   :)

P.S. I won't be beaten!

That would probably bring me down, too, Wolven.  I'm sure things will look up.  Like Phanjam said, just voicing it is a step in the right direction.
