Legendary Items

I am getting ready to tackle Legendary items and have come to the conclusion that building "themes" around one item will get rather redundant and could be over powered.  I want Legendary items to be more than just an item with a bunch of stats.  I would like to build a story around them.

A system I haven't really looked at is the Sets system.

I am thinking all Legendary items should be revolved around sets, that way I can spread the "themes" around multiple items without being too repetitive.

People love sets right?   ;)

The other thing to go along with the sets are I will strip all the Legendary items of their affixes so they spawn random affixes (in a controlled manner) and having the set bonuses be the bonuses people go after.  This will add variety to the items but still giving something static for players to work towards with completing sets.

Thoughts?

In the spirit of my crafting system, I personally went with sets. I have a lot of ideas that have been implemented and I don't want to give too much away, however, you can do ALOT with set items. The set affixes themselves have their limitations, but they're a good building block.

As a player, I also prefer 'sets' because I have a knack for collecting stuff. I think legendaries are cool and all, but like you mentioned, they seem very... recycled. Most of the items do, really.

I like themes but I don't at the same time, ideally I like for any and everyone to play exactly how they want to, regardless how that may be. I've added alot of things like passives and stances to make builds more customizable.

I love your idea of reworking legendaries and I can't wait to see what you come up with~

To summarize, I like the idea of sets, and I like the idea of loose themes that allow for more flexible builds.

Oh yeah...love me some sets.

I have always believed set items should be the rarest items in the game...reminds me of the Rod of Seven Parts from Dungeons and Dragons. Another upvote from me!

Hi RnF. Yes I love the idea of building up sets more than they are currently in TL2.  But I also think there's a place for "one off" unique Legendaries. The uniques should be few and far between though and pretty whacky! and with good backstory support too.

As for set "themes", in TL1CP for example we're building up the passive skills from the "player archetypes" (Mage, Warrior, Rogue, etc.). Maybe you could build sets from those arhcetypes as well, including cross-themes (Elemental-Damage Warrior, Battle-Mage, etc.)?

Thanks for the feedback. I will most likely mix sets with single items with some themed based and others kind of random.

There is a lot that can be done here, just hope I am not getting in over my head  :P  The one thing I don't like about set affixes, is they do not behave in the same manner as affixes used for items.

They can't spawn with ranges and they do not scale, so some variety might be lost.  But if they have 2-4 random affixes to go with the set affixes, it might be ok.

The thing I love about using sets to add affixes, is they don't count for slots and the items will still spawn random affixes to fill the slot values.  It's a much easier process than what I was originally planning.  Still tedious though.

I can also make "1 item sets" and add all the "Legendary" affixes that way and still have random affixes spawn on the items.

Specific to this item overhaul mod, are u thinking new sets which replace the sets in the vanilla game? Or r u thinking of reworking/re-theming the existing sets?

I have thought about replacing them all together, but I will try re-working them first.  I want some familiarization left intact.

I do plan on removing their affixes and replacing them with randomly spawned affixes, and then buffing their set affixes and re-working them if they don't really make sense.
