I've been doing a lot of work around getting new meshes and rigs into torchlight 2 properly animated using blender 3d and a few plug ins.  I'm wanting to create a guide so other people can do the same thing without going through as much pain.  There can be quite a bit of setup involved depending on what you are trying to do.

Initially, I was just planning on making a guide for adding new npcs, pets, and player characters.  But I was chatting on discord with @Kva3imoda last night and it was suggested I have something simpler as a starting point.

I do plan on creating some template blender projects for sharing as well.

So my question is, what do people want from a guide?

Kva's suggestion was how to start with make animated weapon.  This would be a weapon mesh, that is rigged to it's own skeleton, and has an idle animation.

I was thinking of showing how to transfer and customize animations from the player classes to a Ponya since the Ponya has a similar skeleton structure.

Or I could show how to transfer animations to a model from outside the game that doesn't have the same skeleton structure.   I might be open to suggestions on which model to use for the tutorial.  As long as there isn't a licensing issue.

For each tutorial I make, I will show the workflow I use to export from blender to the ogre format and get it into guts.

I'll start with written tutorials and make videos once I'm further along.

Enough of my wall of text, what would be useful in a animating for torchlight with blender guide?

Hi @Vkoslak

I'm very interested in the suggestion to create an animation guide, because I'm interested in 3D models. I want to learn about 3D models and how to use Blender. And what it takes to get started, because I'm a beginner in this. :D

This is for beginners animators. Say basic knowledge of working with animated models and skeletons.

1 part. Basics.
How to install  Gyro Gearloose addon. What version of Blender is needed. What additional tools are needed to get started. Import a simple animated model.

2 part.
a. Create a simple new animation based on a simple model. Show how to export this animation

b. Add a new bone to the skeleton and the appropriate new additional part of the model. Make more complex animations. Export model, skeleton and animation.

Let's say this is a guide for more advanced Blender users, not for beginners. PJ and I must understand how to use it.  :)

Well, if you have not started Sch123 yet, then you should start with introductory lessons - control keys and interface.

Hi all!

@Vkoslak what an awesome idea!

I think the beginning of the guide should be as simple as;
- how to find an existing animation - and it's associated files
- how to start with an existing animation
- how to add or modify to an existing animation.
- how to do basic things like change colors
- how to change the size.

And maybe you can help me with where I am stuck - I am using GUTS to edit and existing animation that I really like.

I would like to extend how long the animation exists. Currently it lasts about 2 secs.

I would like to make the animation 4 secs long - so it looks like the ground is burning underneath the mobs after I cast a fire spell and I can give them a fire dot.

I am currently editing/modifying emitduration in the particle UI of GUTS.

But after I save and go into the UI to test it out - the animation duration does not match what it is in the particle UI.

Thoughts?

and the guide is a GREAT idea btw - I would definitely use it!

@Kevin Boyle Thanks for the input!

I was talking more about animating meshes with the skeleton. You are describing the particle engine in ogre 3d.
While I know you can do particles in blender, I'm not sure if there is an exporter that would make them like what is in ogre.

Maybe this would be useful?
